Yes. You read that right.
Approximately 54,000 people will be laid off or discharged from their jobs TODAY. It’s a staggering number, but it’s a reality that we all need to prepare for. You’re probably wondering where I got this insight. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the number of people laid off or discharged monthly. In February, that number was 1.5 million across the U.S. If you divide that number by the number of days in February, you get over 54,000 people daily. Now, I know there are many assumptions here. For instance, there were far fewer terminations and layoffs on weekends. And I’m sure that the number of terminations fluctuates each day. But the math is not the article’s point, as I have no business doing math. But I am in the business of preparing you mentally, emotionally, and financially for what could surprisingly be your last day at work.
If you’re feeling anxious, stressed, or worried about your job security, you’re not alone. As someone who has been through the experience of job loss and has seen the aftermath, I understand how it can affect your mental and emotional well-being. When I first entered corporate America straight out of law school, the organization I worked for went through a grueling round of layoffs within my first month. I was confident that I would be impacted. Last one in, the first one to go, right?
Fortunately for me, I wasn’t impacted. But, I learned a hard lesson during those days. This particular corporation was the heartbeat of the small region where it was located. I watched as many impacted people had worked there for over twenty years, and their lives resolved that company. Because this corporation was located in a small, almost rural area, there weren’t any immediate opportunities awaiting them. Most would have to pack up their bags and lives and relocate. It was disheartening to watch them go through the aftermath of these layoffs. They were mortified about what was next. They stressed and became depressed about leaving their “work family” behind, self-blame, and financial insecurity, and witnessing this traumatic experience embedded fear in me. For the next few years, I worked in fear. I feared
❌ I would be unexpectedly laid off.
❌ I would be unjustly terminated.
❌ How long could I pay my bills if these things were to happen
❌ How long would it take me to find another job?
And believe it or not, I feared reaching my full potential.
Why was I sitting around waiting for someone else to dictate my future? To write my next chapter? I held all the necessary power to prepare for what I saw as the inevitable.
The truth is, no job is permanent. Look at history and how many founders of organizations have ultimately lost their jobs. They poured tens of thousands of hours into conceiving and making a dream come true. Then someone else decided they were no longer needed (uhm, uhm, Steve Jobs). No matter how rewarding your workplace can be, some variables can change over time, making your dream job a nightmare. Leaving you fearing, what’s next?
Once I started turning my fears into freedom, something magical happened. I started developing and pursuing my passion and purpose both in and outside the workplace. While simultaneously climbing the corporate ladder all the way up to the C-suite, I:
The next thing I knew, this “side hustle” made me a multi-six figure income while I was still working my full-time executive job. I am not writing these things to “brag.” I am giving you an example of what you can do when you stop fearing how someone else (i.e., your manager or your workplace) will dictate your future and give yourself the freedom to dictate your own future!
